Just follow the day and reach for the sun!  The Polyphonic Spree

Dear Marymount Learners:

I have started this post with the precept for today.  Following the day and reaching for the sun means to take things as they come with humility and enthusiasm, but always reaching for excellence...always aiming high to do our best in whatever tasks lay ahead of us.  When we hear that we need to take things as they come we might think that we can stay in our comfort zone, passively waiting for things to happen.  I invite you to think the contrary: to consider that there are things out of our control and that trying to control them can lead to frustration. Nevertheless, even when we think that we don't have options or possibility of choice, we always do.  Focusing on those things that we can control will strengthen us, give us choice, and ultimately make us free.

Let's take what we are living right now: the COVID -19 crisis has forced us into a situation we cannot control.  None of us at Marymount or at any other school in the world, I think wanted to end this academic year this way.  Nevertheless here we are all doing the best that we can...following the day and reaching for the sun.  I trust that you will continue to do that everyday!

We need to continue to move forward as we have always done as a Marymount community.  We are preparing for the next academic year, which we will most likely begin under one of the following two escenarios:  1) 100% E-learning or 2) Blended model, where we rotate between e-learning and in person classes in smaller student groups.  More about this in the future....in the meantime I invite you to share your thoughts on the following two questions:

1. Think about your e-learning experience for this school year: what would you want the school to  keep for next year?

2. Think about the next school year: If you could change one thing of  e-learning at Marymount what would it be?

Please identify your grade level in your response.  Have a great last week of school , enjoy your vacation and keep safe and healthy!!  Miss you , Mrs. Anabella

  1. 1. I would like to keep the schedule we use in E-learning for next year. I feel that the way it is structured and the briefness lets us have longer classes without feeling like we are doing too much.
    2. E-learning is a completely different way of learning, and what I would change is the teachers' mentality of wanting to complete a curriculum without really knowing if their students learned or understand the topics.

  2. 1. I beleive that if the school can keep having the current homerooms where lots of important information and information for the rest of the day gets shared.

    2. If I could change something from E-Learning would be the fact that some days class can go on until 4:00pm, I beleive a good cutoff point is at 3;00pm.

  3. 1. I believe that the schedule we use in E-learning is efficient enough for our work and isn't nearly as stressful as other schedules. The classes are distributed evenly and the day system works very well.

    2. What I would change would be how long class is in some cases. I think independent time/flex time should be the last periods of the day, so anyone who doesn't need to attend finishes their day. I also would say that some teachers should realise that E-learning makes things much complicated, so we aren't in the headspace to learn as quickly as we did in the physical building.

    1. 1. I will like to keep flextime. As well as, the amount of work determined for each subject.
      2. If I could modify something will be the schedule; make it more efficient for all classes to be over at 3 pm. Homeroom is not that necessary, we could make it shorter.

  5. 1) I believe that keeping the structure and formation certain subjects have developed would be an overall improvement for students and teachers. Presenting a clear road map form beggining to end for each topic and bimester as a whole.

2)The mentality that some teachers posses of how classwork and homework is being handled. It seems that some teachers dont respect the timeslots given.

  7. 1. For next year I would like the schedules to be the same. I think that theres a good balance between subjects and the amount of clases.

    2. Sometimes I think that I am working more in E-Learning than what I worked in in person classes. Just because I am in my house doing "nothing" it doesn't mean I want to be doing homework all the time. Some teachers don't measure the amount of work they send to students, making us feel overwhelm.

    1. 1. I would like to keep the schedules because there is a good amount of classes of each subject through the week.

      2. For the next year I would like that teachers give us more classes for projects because there is not so much time to finish them. I will also like that there is asynchronous day more frequently.

  8. 1. For next year I would like to keep the E-Learning schedule. I think it is efficient because we get enough work done in a shorter period of time.
    2. I think that the time for the flextimes could change for the better. I believe that if they occupied the last periods it will be more productive because if we did not finish something we could use that time to do so, but if we are done, we could continue with our day.

  9. 1. I would like to keep the day 1, day 2, day 3, etc. system. It is better than the one that was based on the days of the week.

    2. I would like that when teachers give us quizzes or exams, that they actually are meant to do during class time. Some claim to be meant to last for the period, but no one actually finishes them during that time.

  10. 1. I would like to keep the schedule because I think it has a good balance between the subjects, maybe minor changes could improve it, like replacing some clases we have every day with others we only have once a week. Asynchronous days should be held more often because it gives us time to complete work that maybe cannot be completed with just class time.

    2. For next year I think teachers can measure the time length it takes to do assignments because sometimes teachers think an assignment can be done in 50 minutes but it is very long and complicated and actually takes much longer to complete. Also I don't think that making the day go until 4:00 for some people is necessary because of the group system, if two classes have Spanish and the day is until for for another class, they can have English and that's something I think can be easily fixed because we already have the groups.

  11. 1. I would like the school to continue with the same schedule, since it is efficient and productive.
    2. I believe that the school should implement new tools and mechanisms so that a particular student can communicate with a teacher. Sometimes it is necessary to have a private conversation and although this could be done by mail sometimes there is no answer.

  12. 1) Hopefully, we could find a way to keep the two flextime periods after lunch to work on missing classwork or assignments that don't necessarily correspond with the specific topic of the class. Furthermore, keeping asynchronous days (with some changes and adaptions) if possible would be a great way of breaking the monotony of the typical school week and keeping students engaged.
    2) Mainly, the way that individual teachers manage the duration and size of their classwork and homework could use some changes. This would help reduce stress in the student body, which we all really need in these difficult times.

  13. 1. I would like the school to keep the e-learning schedule, because it is less overwhelming. Through this schedule, I have seen how my learning speed has increased too. Also, the school should keep asynchronous days. It is a day in which students can learn to manage their time, feel relaxed, and be responsible.
    2. If I could change something about e-learning it would be finishing class at 4p.m. The time period between 3:10 and 4p.m could be used independently by the students to finish undone work.

  14. 1. I would like the school to keep the schedules as we start homeroom at 8:30 and classes at 9:00, since scientific studies show the brain is more active from 9:00 a.m.

    2. I would change the following: I would make two asynchronous classes instead of one per week because it enhances creativity.

  15. 1. I consider my e-learning experience has changed since the start of its implementation since our voice has been heard and adaptations have been made. For the next school year, I would like to keep a similar schedule as the one we follow until the day. I'd like to keep asynchronous days at least once a week, and the feedbacks we constantly have.

    2. I would like to implement a virtual system where homework is managed per class, since even though it was not allowed, we as students often found ourselves overwhelmed and exhausted from being the entire day in the computer finishing schoolwork. Besides, I would like classes from 3-4 to end because they are very late, students, as well as teachers, are tired from the previous classes, and they take up time from other activities we would like to perform at home.

    1) I want that next year, the school continues listening and taking into account the opinion of the students. I liked this new cycle schedule (Day 1, day 2, etc), more than the schedule we had before (Monday, Tuesday, etc). I hope that this is continued next year, that we continue starting class at 8:30, and that the asynchronous days continue.

    2) For next year I would like to continue in the E-learning model 100%. If I could change 1 thing of the E-learning model, I would changed how each day is structured. I would change this structure so that we stop finishing school at 4pm some days, and I will also change that we have more asynchronous days.

  18. 1. I would like to keep for next year is the E-Learning schedule the school has been using. This schedule allows me to keep up with the dynamic, rhythm, and requirements of each class. Although learning virtually is not as efficient as learning in school, this schedule has aided me a lot in my learning. Having asynchronous days, a cycle (day 1, day 2, and so on), and flex time have made my education easier and productive.
    2. I would change the way homework is handled. Since E-Learning started, I have felt very overwhelmed with my homework. Many of my classmates - including myself - are in front of a computer for at least 12 hours a day. I suggest applying a homework schedule or giving some guidelines to teachers for when sending homework.

  19. 1. For the next year I would like to keep the e-learning schedule we have been using. I consider this schedule is more efficient and is better than the one we applied when we went to school.
    2. One thing that I would change of Marymount e-learning is the work given for flextime. Sometimes teachers give us a lot of work to do for flextime and sometimes since we are not able to finish in the given time, so we have to finish after classes are over.

  21. 1. For the next year I would like to keep homeroom, this time is really nice to start the day, to talk to our teacher and classmates.

    2. Mybe I would change the amount of work teachers give us in flextime/independent work, sometimes it is too much for the time we have to finish it.
